Value for money - good place
on Nov 20, 2015
The place is intended for backpackers and people on a low budget, and for that target you get a good place compared to the price.
We shared a 6 people room next to the front desk, there where noice and people where going and coming to the room at all hours. This is what to expect from a 6 person shared room.
Not to expect where the warm and friendliness of the staff, who all helped us with finding resteaurents and places to party. - Thanks a lot!
It is placed quite close to Copacabana with all the pros and cons of this. It is easy to get around, but be aware of the "kids" on the streets.
Don't stay here

My friend and I booked this place, seeking a budget option in Copacabana, as there really are none. This place is cheap for the area, but with good reason. you will sleep on bunk beds in a room the size of a closet. the beds are very uncomfortable, and the pillows are made from plastic and offer zero head support (it's like sleeping on a mattress). the bathroom is moldy, the whole room smells like mold and urine. the only pluses were that the AC window unit was decent and the front desk staff was nice and helpful. in copacabana, you are better off coughing up $20-30 more a night and staying at another place...which will be light years ahead of Copinha.

Nice staff, but not very nice.
The hostel comes off very dirty, and old (time for a makeover)
but the staff is nice, with good english and a helpful mind. Close to the beach.
Aweful breakfast, but restaurants are close.
Avoid this place!

Everything in that hostel was so bad that I don't even know where to start.
Right, breakfast maybe:this place offers by far the worst breakfast that I've eaten in Brasil!! Just plain bread, with limited marmalade and coffee.
Being used to plenty of fruit at other hostels I had to go and get some myself from the shop. Just when I was about to prepare it in the kitchen, there comes the lady (I think she was an owner) telling me that I can't use the kitchen today and then she gave me the weirdest explanation, talking about some old and sick lady complaining. I really didn't get what was she on about. When I replied that I need to put some nutritions in my system and need to prepare the fruit, because breakfast here is just horrible, she then went on telling me how everything is so expensive in Rio (how unprofessional! ) and told me that if I want a better breakfast there are options, but I have to pay more, not that anyone had mentioned this earlier..
Couple of days later, even though my name was written on it, all my food, including tape wear was thrown out of the fridge, and staff just shrug their shoulders saying, they don't know where could it be (?!?)
Then comes the room. So, there was no water for the whole day! Again, thanks for mentioning in advance! When it finally came back, the toilet in my room broke. there was this constant sound of water running which was really annoying. I was then told that it will get fixed at 23.00 at night!!! At 23.30 someone came, switched off the water supply and we were then informed that we can't use the toilet that night. Not one word of apology.. The next day I demanded, they cut the price of the room...We got 20 Reals back.
The lockers have too little of a whole to fit a padlock in, I had to buy a new, tiny one..
The cockroaches became a normality, running under a table at breakfast, disgusting..
I was unlucky, that I was in Rio on a national bank holiday and everything was packed, so I had no choice, but to stay at Copinha. I was literally counting the days to get out of there. Everything just seemed to go wrong and there were complications after complications. It has definitely affected my stay in Rio, what a shame..
The only good thing that I can say about this place is the staff. There were really nice and spoke good English and Spanish. Other then that, my only advice to other travellers is to AVOID this place! For me it was the worst hostel I stayed at during my 3 months trip in South America
