The hotel Dunedin needed
on Nov 17, 2019
When I moved away from Dunedin, the building that today houses the Distinction was a gutted shell, the former Chief Post Office where my old mum used to do her banking. At the time, I doubted it would ever find a new use, but my gosh, they've done a fine job! Distinction Hotels as a chain is mostly a mixed bag of reflagged properties, but being purpose-built, this is definitely the jewel in their crown.
Upon arrival, I can only assume the bellman (do we even use that term in NZ?) noted my name from my bag tag and passed it on to the front desk. I'm not usually the sort of person to say "do you know who I am?" but in this case, I could have, because they did. That's attention to detail, and almost guaranteed a five star review right there.
Room was great; please see the pics. Rain shower, awesome bed, light in the closet, double glazed windows, all you'd expect at world class hotel accommodations (which Dunedin was sorely lacking when I left!) Heck, there's even a personal laundry in the bathroom. You don't see that every day.
What negatives can I mention? It's 2019 and there really should be a metric ton of power outlets (AC and USB) easily accessible on each side of the bed. As it was, I had to grovel on the floor and unplug lamps and such. This may have been acceptable 20 years ago, but not now. Should be easy to remedy; the light switches are built into the bedheads so adding outlets just above or below should be trivial. On me I had: phone. another phone. power bank. Kindle. headphones. Bluetooth adapter. another Bluetooth adapter. laptop. and this is for a weekend away with just carryon luggage. need power... desk not enough... I don't sit at desk...
Also, the TV is big but not smart. Being able to cast Netflix/whatnot without bringing yet another device with me would be great.
Anyway, five stars. This is a handsome beast of an old building and the hotel conversion is a thing of beauty. Life doesn't often get me down to Dunners but I may well be back.

We stayed one night at the Distinction Hotel which is very close to Dunedin city center . It is in the former post office building and was restored and refurbished and opened maybe 5 years ago . The room was spacious with a sofa and very comfortable mattress and pillows . The bathroom was large and much to our surprise a washer and dryer which was fantastic as we had been traveling for over three weeks . While it was a short stay it was very enjoyable and the staff was absolutely great . Please make sure to visit the Otago Peninsula and see Glenfalloch Gardens and restaurant and Larnach Castle a short drive from the distinction 20 minutes . I would highly recommend the Distinction Hotel .
Luxury in the South

The Distinction Hotel is second to none! The staff were welcoming on arrival and one of the porters went out of his way to help a colleague who had extra bags.
The rooms are luxuriously appointed with feather toppers on the beds that make you feel like you are sleeping on a cloud! The bathrooms are well laid out and include a washer and dryer which had easy to follow instructions on them.
In in room dining was promptly delivered. If there was one thing that could be improved is the menu for business travellers but in saying that nothing was a problem and if you asked for something off the menu, they were happy to oblige.
The in house restaurant had a reasonable menu and the food was beautifully presented.
I’d highly recommend this hotel - it is going to be hard to beat!!!
Great addition to Dunedin

I have been wanting to stay for sometime as used to work next door to this grand building. Expectations met and raised, the building is beautifully made out, lots of old world charm and taste. The rooms spacious, well set out and the bed splendid for a good nights sleep. It is in the exchange area and short walk back up to the Octagon.
Great hotel - great location

My second stay at the Distinction. Comfortable and tidy room. Bonus washing machine & dry in the bedroom. The service from the reception team was always friendly and helpful. Great location, short walk to the octagon.
