An oasis in Pune
on Dec 26, 2017
As a music lover, the most refreshing thing to me was that the hotel has an excellent professional musician perform on flute every morning. This was especially welcome after having stayed at a 5 star hotel in Mumbai where they had a single CD played repeatedly throughout the day.
The hotel has the high standards that one expects from the JW brand, but I also found the restaurant staff to be very friendly, without being obsequious - shout out to Chirag and Ashish. And the “cutting tea” at breakfast was a special treat.
Definitely going back.

One of the best hotels in this category

On your visit to Pune, if you are looking for an inexpensive hotel with the possibility of gastrointestinal misadventures, security issues and obsequious (which often passes for hospitality) staff, then the JW Marriott in NOT for you. If, on the other hand, you desire a well-deserved respite from the robust hustle and bustle that is India, a need to decompress after a hectic tour of tourist attractions, reliably clean rooms, efficient and friendly staff, a variety of delicious and varied cuisine, well-equipped fitness facilities and extremely helpful and knowledgeable concierges, then I highly recommend staying at the JW Marriott. Your stay will not be cheap, but will certainly be well worth the extra cost.
Recently, I spent five nights at the hotel. In my opinion, the JWM, Pune, is one of the best hotels in its category. In addition to the clean rooms, excellent food and convenience that one expects from 4-5 star hotels, what makes the JWM, Pune, special - is the staff. Without exception, from the glamorous, sari–clad greeters who welcomed me to the hotel, the people at the desk, the concierge, the restaurant waiters, the attendants in the gym to the housekeeping staff, all were courteous, friendly, efficient and went out of their way to make my stay comfortable and enjoyable. I particularly appreciated the little touches of hospitality – the greeter who came by for a chat whenever I was in the lobby, the waiter at the Italian restaurant who offered me a complementary dessert and a momento key-chain of the restaurant, and the house-keeping staff who left me fresh flowers and extra teabags (and chocolates) for my morning pick-me-up. All staff spoke English – passable (house-keeping) to fluent (greeters, front-desk, waiters) and communication was not a problem.
Breakfast, included in some packages and served at the Spice Kitchen on the main floor, is a buffet with the usual western fare but I opted for freshly-made crisp dosas and fruit. The coffee was excellent as was the service. I also tried the Italian themed Alto Vino and the Shakahari (Hindi for vegetarian). Both were excellent. The Shakahari serves “thalis” – fixed meals with a myriad of sauces and curries accompanied by breads and rice. The thalis represent cuisines from different regions of India. At the Alta Vino I had a delicious green salad and the gnocchi with a couple of glasses of an excellent Chianti. The gnocchi were unusual – squash and potato stuffed with cheese – but delicious non-the-less. The portions were perfect – sufficient but not overwhelming.
For visits to friends and sight-seeing, the concierge arranged a car and driver – a fixed 4-hour package. It was likely more expensive than Uber or Ole but certainly more reliable. The driver assigned to me spoke excellent English, was extremely skilled at negotiating the heavy and bewildering traffic and very knowledgeable about local attractions.
In November and December the hotel is a popular venue for weddings which can be noisy. However, if you can arrange a room away from the wedding halls and enjoy seeing the glamorous and colorfully-clad guests, it can be an interesting experience. Also note that the hotel has smoking floors and if you do not appreciate the smell of cigarettes ask for a room on a non-smoking floor.
