Good option in the location
on Sep 16, 2018
Hotel Esplanade Chambers is one of the few decent options available in the Chandni Chowk neighbourhood area. That said it's a budget hotel so rooms are small and can fit only 2 people and their luggage and so is the bathroom. Thankfully rooms are clean but you have to ask them to clean your room if you are staying more than one night. Decent toiletries and towels were provided to us.
One major negative of the hotel is the ultra small lift where it's difficult to fit 3 people even without any luggage.
So if you are travelling with more than one bag it will be a challenge during check in and check-out as the hotel is located on the 2nd and 3rd floor of the building.
The employees also arrange for meals on request and there are a number of restaurants just around the corner which offer a variety of non veg choices. Not too far away once can also find vegetarian only options.
One note of caution, if you are booking a triple room even if your booking confirmation says 3 guests paid for fully, the hotel owner insists on extra payment for the 3rd guest.
Quaint, historic neighbourhood

Quaint, historic neighbourhood. Good place to begin your walk down the memory lane in Calcutta. The decor is very old school and has a 90s-ish feel. The locality is great, access to the metro ensures that nothing is too far away.
Decent, Well-Located Lodging
on May 10, 2018
Second stay in this hotel. Spacious room for the price (Deluxe Room), clean, things worked. On fairly quiet side street, but just around the corner from one of the entrances to Chandni Chowk metro station. OK Breakfast included.
It is not located in a "hotel district", so taxis can have trouble finding it. Not nearly so much trouble this time as last, but still required a little bit of looking.
The hotel entrance is down a passageway, then up several flights of stairs. Exceedingly tiny and ancient elevator can also be used.
Staff is generally friendly, but both times we arrived on morning trains, and both times (especially this time) it was a struggle to get prepaid reservations honored (this might not be a problem arriving later). This time it was a reservation through Priceline, which was rejected until more experienced staff finally arrived around midday. Note that we did not expect the room to be ready when we arrived, but hoped for the chance to drop luggage at the hotel and go somewhere. Instead we had to wait for hours until someone arrived who could recognize the confirmation number. Priceline booked though Agoda; perhaps it would have been better if we had booked directly through Agoda.
Thus would recommend against using Priceline here if you are actually arriving in the morning.
Good budget option for Kolkota.
on Nov 21, 2017
The standard of budget options in Kolkota is very poor in general. I've stayed in a lot of places around Sudder Street / Marquis Street that are much worse that this. All the comments previously made about the lift are true. Many of the rooms are tiny too - but the deluxe rooms are actually pretty good. There is only one room like the picture in the advertisement with a sofa etc. However Aftab the Manager is extremely helpful and his staff are friendly and accommodating. You need to specifically request hot water if you want it giving 20 minutes notice. It's relatively clean for a budget place and has an excellent location away from all the other cheap tourist spots, but close enough to walk to them. Breakfast doesn't start until after 8 and after 9 some mornings which could be improved on. You might be able to get tea and toast if you have to go out before 8.30 am. It's difficult to find at first. Get to Gate 3 of Chandni Chowk Metro Station. Imagine coming out of the station - turn right and right again into the next side street ant it is about 10 doors down - red sign 10 metres above ground level. Finally - the Wi-Fi is free and pretty reliable.
