5 days in Derby Cottages at Agonda beach, in Goa
on Jan 7, 2020
The owners & staff of Derby cottage are very very humble. They were so helpful in booking our leisure trips around, but also helped us book our bike, boating trip, and our return train tickets, amongst many other favors. The food is just exquisite. We did not enjoy the food as much as we did in the cottage. Their seafood platter is amazing. Their butter garlic red snapper preparation is excellent.
We booked a sea facing cottage, which was wonderful. Novembers are usually quieter than dec & jan. And agonda was perfect cause we needed peace and quiet. The hot/cold water, aircon, wifi & front desk facilities are up to date.
As a muslim, i did not have to worry about halal food, as they serve halal meat. Also the staff is so friendly and energetic. Mr. Jess (owner) & Arjun (manager) are very pleasant humble and kind people. They helped my husband with the preparations he needed in order to surprise me on my birthday. All in all, our trip was amazing, definitely gonna go to Goa again only if theres availability in Dersy.

Words cannot fully express how happy I am that we chose Dersy cottages for our lodging in Goa. This was mine and my friends first trip to India, and we chose to stay a weekend in Goa before heading to Kochi for a wedding the next week. We found the listing on Airbnb and were drawn to it for the stunning Arabian Sea views. It’s located on a peaceful stretch of Agonda Beach, South Goa, near several shops, restaurants, and many similar looking other resorts. The rooms are simple, but provide all you need to have an enjoyable stay.
What sets Dersy apart is the staff. Jess, Arjun, Sameer, and the rest of the staff were an absolute delight to work with. They know each of their guests and will do whatever they can to ensure you enjoy your stay. Prior to arrival, Jess was always an Airbnb message away to answer any questions we had, which was very reassuring for first timers. Our first day at Dersy, he assisted us in booking a sunset boat ride (highly recommend) that stopped at two nearby islands, and a day trip to Old Goa and a local spice farm.
The staff member who went completely above and beyond was the driver, Raj. My friend and I wanted to do a day trip to Old Goa and a local spice farm. We weren’t sure how to get there, since it’s about an hour from Agonda, and did not necessarily want to spend an hour in an auto rickshaw. Jess created us an itinerary and Raj spent the day driving us around to the various sights. Towards the end of the day when we were headed back to Agonda, we received a message from the bride of the wedding we were attending in Kochi. She informed us that we would need to get blouses for under our sarees and Salwar Kameez custom made in Goa, as ready made sizes typically run small and there would not be time in Kochi to get them custom made (we originally planned to go shopping with the bride once we arrived in Kochi). We asked Raj if he had any ideas for us, and he quickly rerouted and took us to a shop in Canacona to buy fabric and then to a tailor. Raj patiently waited and translated for us two panicked American women who had never purchased the items before. Somehow, he sweet-talked the couple into completing the Salwar Kameez in 24 hours, just in time for us to leave for Kochi. The tailors were able to assist us with the Salwar Kameez, but not the blouses. Raj then drove us back to Agonda to the “local tailor” Susella’s (spelling is probably wrong) home, and she agreed to sew our blouses for the next day. Raj then came back to Dersy the next day to take us back to Canacona and Susella’s home, and patiently waited for us to try everything on to make sure they fit.
The food at the Dersy restaurant was also exceptional. The menu is large and has something for everyone. We chose to eat there for all but one of our meals throughout our three night stay, because we knew it would be good. We ordered a wide variety of items and were never disappointed.
If I ever have the opportunity to go to Goa again, I will absolutely stay at the Dersy again. I’ve stayed in many luxury hotels in my day, and even spent several years working in one, and I’ve never encountered this level of quality service.
