We visited Huambo on our tour of Angola in August 2017. When realizing that all the lodges and guesthouses on our list of available accommodation in Huambo do no longer exist, we came upon the Ritz hotel as our last option. We expected luxury expensive accommodation but was surprised to find reasonable prized mid range luxury accommodation. The rooms were neat and clean. Although the rooms had a kettle there were no cups or coffee/tea/sugar available. The rooms also only had one towel, which we needed to share. Breakfast was delicious with sufficient variety to accommodate everyone's taste.
Beware not a Ritz Carlton

To my great surprise I realized ( unfortunately upon my arrival ) that said establishment was not at all what I expected...
When posed certain problems and asked at the reception, I was told that it was not the "real stuff"...
I should have been more careful in my selection, so fellow travellers beware!!
The refurbished rooms were ok, but not of the usual standard expecting by a Ritz hotel...
Breakfast was even worse!
The only sunshine and exception to my dissapointment, was the very efficient Massimo from the front desk/reception who did everything in his "powers" to make our stay as "enjoyable"
The best option you could find in Huambo

Nice hotel, well located, clean and with good staff at least in the reception.
Rooms are clean and comfortable but matress was likr as if I was sleeping in the floor. I guess this is my only complain about the toom.
The rate include a breakfast buffet, and the sellection of food is good. Dinner was also very good but with limited offers, and you can always find good alternatives (Portuguese style) in many places in Huambo. On the negative point, one of the staff at the restaurant in the hotel had an attitude, but luckily enough there were others that promptly noticed our unhappiness and were immediately available to help.
Huambo is always nice and calm, clean and with a nice weather. Good place to relax outside of Luanda.
Ritzing It in Huambo

This is a surprisingly modern hotel (transported lock stock and barrel with all the latest modern conveniences from China) on the main road in Huambo.
Cost is about $145 for a double and $135 for a single.
There is a shortage of hotel accomodation in Huambo so make sure you have a booking. You make reservations by calling them. They don't have e-mail and they use the fax machine of the bank next door and never seem to get faxes you send. You can also try their head office in Luanda if you get no response.
Rooms are small but modern and very clean. They have airconditioning (Huambo can get cold in winter) and a modern TV. Bathrooms are compact and only have shower stalls (like in most of Africa water gets clogged up in the drains) but have working hairdryers which is a minor miracle for this part of the world.
Breakfast is inlcuded in the rate and is a generous hot and cold buffet. The restaurant also serves meals but the menu selection is a bit limited. Check what you want as you might have to order 6 hours in advance! Reception can point you to several alternative eating places not far away (but you need a car as it's too far to walk).
Huambo is a clean, quite place and a nice break from Launda. Most of the guests are Chinese or Portuguese businessmen with some Angolan families over the weekend. It;s about 11 hours drive from Luanda. The road is good but there are lots of accidents due to overladen trucks so plan accordingly and take care!
